Silicon Carbide - Is a bluish-black material created by fusing silica and coke. It is in the same family as Ceramic (due to the Silica), but has much better lubrication qualities and is harder. The most common silicon carbide used in a mechanical seal is reaction-bonded silicon carbide. In Chemical applications however, Alpha Sintered Silicon Carbide may be recommended. Alpha Sintered Silicon carbide does however sacrifice the Pressure Velocity ratios due to the lack of un-reacted free carbon. Silicon carbide seal faces have the property of excellent resistant-corrosion, high mechanical strength, high thermal conductivity and good self-lubrication. Silicon carbide seal faces are widely used in many different industries, including spacecraft, machinery, metallurgy, printing and dyeing, foodstuff, pharmaceutical, auto industry and so on. When the silicon carbide seal faces are combined with graphite faces, the friction is the smallest; they can be made into mechanical seals which are able to work in highest working requirements.
